This unique festival honored Pan, the Roman god of nature, and ( The Juno), goddess of women and marriage. In the celebration of this festival young people drew names slips from a box and exchanged presents. Gradually the tradition of giving gifts was replaced by sending greeting cards. The tradition of sending the Valentine gifts was slowly replaced by mailing the cards with messages. In the 1700's and 1800's some shops sold books known as valentine writers. These all books had the ideas for writing valentines.
